Aston Martin has just secured one of the biggest acquisitions in their history in Formula 1, and it’s not a driver.

The Silverstone-based outfit has reportedly finalized a deal with Adrian Newey, widely regarded as one of the greatest engineers in the history of the sport.

Newey will have significant input in technical decisions at Aston Martin and will begin his role after the end of his tenure with Red Bull in early 2025.

The 65-year-old will earn $100 million over three years, which is twice his previous salary at Red Bull, according to former Red Bull F1 driver Robert Doornbos.

The British engineer has served as the Chief Technical Officer of Red Bull Racing since 2006, but he announced his departure with immediate effect from their Formula 1 operations in May 2024.

However, Newey will continue working with Red Bull on their limited-production hybrid sports car Red Bull RB17 for the remainder of his time with the company.

Newey has designed championship-winning cars for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull during his more than three decades of experience in the sport. The latter's RB19 car in the 2023 season is the most dominant in Formula One history, winning 21 out of the 22 races held that year.

Ferrari Refuses To Meet Adrian Newey's Demands

Scuderia Ferrari was initially the favorite to sign Newey, but their negotiations fell apart after the Prancing Horse team denied the engineer's heavy demands.

Newey reportedly wanted a salary double what he earned at Red Bull, which was not an issue for the Maranello-based team.

However, he also sought significant control over technical staff, requesting to assume decision-making powers usually held by the team principal.

This included having the final say on hiring new engineers, assigning roles, and approving technical partnerships, which proved too much for Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur.
