Hampton, Chesapeake students earn full-ride scholarships to University of Mary Washington
Two Washington Scholars and four Alvey Scholars will be among the thousand incoming Eagles at the University of Mary Washington in fall 2024. The students earned full-ride scholarships, which are renewable for four years of undergraduate studies with GPA and residential requirements. They are also admitted to the Honors Program and have access to funding for experiential learning opportunities such as study abroad and undergraduate research.
North Point student sworn in as new student member of Charles school board
The Charles County Board of Education swore in Samarjeet “Sam” Virk, a rising senior at North Point High School, to be the student member of the board for the next school year. Virk, who was sworn in at the board’s June 17 work session, was elected in May by Charles County students in sixth through 12th grade. The election was held from April 15 through May 17 and 2,408 votes were cast. He secured 63% of the vote, representing 1,513 ballots. ...
Fredericksburg School Board approves new cell phone policy
The Fredericksburg City School Board on Monday night unanimously approved a new policy governing the use of Personal Communication Devices (PCDs) in instructional settings. Under the policy and attached regulation, PCDs include cell phones, tablets and smartwatches among other devices. Elementary school students are not allowed to possess PCDs, while middle and high school students’ devices “must be powered completely off, properly stored away, and not visible in instructional settings during instructional time.”
Governor appoints three new members to University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors
The Virginia Governor’s Office recently announced the appointment of three new members to the University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors. Virginia “Ginny” Gentles, director of the Education Freedom Center at the Independent Women’s Forum; Tim Pohanka ’93, chief operations officer at the Pohanka Automotive Group; and Terris E. Todd, senior advisor to the president of Kingdom Builders Worldwide, will join the board.
