Infant dies on Stanford University campus

(KRON) — A 5-month-old infant died inside an apartment on Stanford University’s campus Monday, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators said the baby’s death appears to be a tragic “accident.”

Stanford University’s Department of Public Safety alerted the Sheriff’s Office at 11:30 a.m. on Monday about an infant who was “not breathing at an apartment along Barnes Court. When
first responders arrived, CPR was started immediately,” SCCSO spokesperson Brooks Jarosz wrote.

The baby was rushed to a hospital and pronounced deceased an hour later.

Deputies, detectives, crime scene investigators, Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner members, and District Attorney’s Office investigators all responded to the home.

“Investigators are still reviewing evidence. The Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner will conduct a final review to determine the child's cause of death. A preliminary investigation suggests this was an accident,” Jarosz wrote.

Jarosz did not say what kind of accident happened to the baby.

“The Sheriff's Office sends its heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time,” he wrote.
