The weekend kicked off with an earthquake near the Virginia border in northern North Carolina early Saturday morning. According to USGS, at 5:44 am on Saturday morning, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake struck from a depth of 5.9 km near Sparta, North Carolina. On July 8, I attended my first town board meeting. It was quite an education. First of all, I had no idea that the public decided if the town needed a new business. Several people asked if Elkin even needed another funeral home. I can’t help wondering if this public need analysis applies to all businesses. We have quite a few eateries in Elkin. Who decides if we need another one? Do the other restaurant owners decide? All this time, I thought it was free market and competition.

Ronda board hires Sink as town attorney
The Ronda commissioners approved hiring a new town attorney during their July 9 meeting. He is Jonathan Sink of Shelby, who will provide legal services for the board on an as-needed basis. Ronda Town Clerk Andrea Stevens said Sink is expected to be at the board’s special meeting at 2 p.m. Friday for discussion of proposed ordinances addressing excessive noise and junked automobiles.
