Georgia Southern Football: 2024 Eagles Season Preview and Prediction

    By Athlon Sports,

When you run as aggressive a passing offense as Georgia Southern does, turnovers are going to happen. However, they clearly have to happen less frequently for the Eagles, whose 31 turnovers were tied with Nebraska for the most in FBS. Another postseason berth is certainly possible, but shouldn’t it be more than that in Year 3 of the Clay Helton era?

Georgia Southern 2024 Season Preview and Prediction

Previewing Georgia Southern’s Offense for 2024

When you throw the ball 62 percent of the time, as Georgia Southern did last season, quarterback play is massively important. Davis Brin, the starter in 2023, has moved on, so the job is open with a few viable candidates, none of whom have a whole lot of prior experience. Redshirt sophomore JC French did appear in 10 games last season and scored his first career touchdown. Indiana transfer Dexter Williams II also has starting experience from 2022 under his belt.

Speaking of transfers, former 4-star Auburn tight end Tyler Fromm is intriguing. The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder was under-utilized in the SEC, totaling 14 catches for 165 yards over four years. There’s also former 4-star Arizona State and Oklahoma wide receiver LV Bunkley-Shelton, who has 575 yards to his name.

As for the holdovers, last year’s second-leading receiver Derwin Burgess Jr. returns after two consecutive seasons of earning All-Sun Belt honorable mention recognition.

Previewing Georgia Southern’s Defense for 2024

The Eagles are hoping that in 2024, defensive experience leads to improvement. The Eagles have allowed 31 points per game each of the last three seasons. First-team All-Sun Belt linebacker Marques Watson-Trent returns after posting 13 tackles for a loss last season. He’s had more than 110 tackles each of the last two seasons.

Newcomers such as Chance Gamble will also be ready to contribute. The former Kennesaw State safety started four games for the Owls last season before taking a redshirt. Georgia Southern’s pass defense has been fairly strong in recent years, including 2023, when they intercepted 13 passes and returned three for touchdowns.

While the Eagles turn the ball over themselves quite a bit, they also force more than a few of their own. Their 13 interceptions were complemented by 15 forced fumbles, eight of which the Eagles recovered.
