A 67-year-old Salem woman is dead after being hit by an SUV at the intersection of Lancaster Drive and Wolverine Street NE in Salem on Wednesday, according to Salem Police.

Police said the crash in northeast Salem was reported at 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday.

The driver of the SUV was in the left turn lane and as the traffic light turned green the pedestrian, identified as Teresita Telesfora Millard, started heading eastbound in the crosswalk when the driver struck her as they were turning, according to a preliminary investigation by the Salem Police Traffic Team .

Police said Millard was taken to Salem Health with critical injuries. She died on Saturday from her injuries.

The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

Police said the driver was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, driving without a license and driving uninsured.

The case remains active and will be forward to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete, police said.

Police said the death is the 16th traffic fatality in Salem this year.
