    Recap: Oregon State football defeats Idaho State 38-15 in season-opener

    Oregon State begins the 2024 football season at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Idaho State at Reser Stadium.

    The Beavers will play their first game with Trent Bray as their head coach . Bray is an OSU alum who previously served as the program's defensive coordinator. Oregon State is coming off an 8-5 season and a Sun Bowl appearance.

    Idaho State, whose head coach is Cody Hawkins, previously an Ohio State assistant coach who also coached at Westview High School in Portland. The Bengals were 3-8 in 2023.

    Jam Griffin ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Anthony Hankerson ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries to lead the way for the Beavers.

    In his first start for Oregon State, Gevani McCoy went 9-for-10 passing for 114 yards and one touchdown.

    The Beavers will now turn their sights on their Sept. 7 matchup at San Diego State. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and will air on CBS Sports Network.

    Fourth Quarter

    • 9:31: Jam Griffin broke loose for a 20-yard touchdown run to push Oregon State's lead to 38-15. Griffin has rushed 160 yards on 20 carries so far today.
    • 6:34: Oregon State safety Jack Kane grabbed his first interception of the season. He picked off a deep pass from Jackson Sharman near the end zone and ran it back to midfield. But his long return was negated by a holding penalty that occurred after the interception.

    Third Quarter

    • 15:00: The Beavers opened the second half with Gevani McCoy at quarterback. On his first passing attempt of the half, he took a deep shot to Trent Walker down the right sideline that drew a pass interference penalty.
    • 10:44: Oregon State produced its first explosive passing play of the day when Gevani McCoy launched a deep pass to David Wells Jr., who made a spectacular running catch for a 55-yard touchdown.
    • 4:50: Anthony Hankerson rumbled up the middle for a 23-yard gain to push the Beavers near the red zone.
    • 3:23: Jam Griffin capped off another bright Oregon State drive with a 22-yard touchdown run to push the Beavers' lead to 31-9.
    • 3:23: Jam Griffin (125 rushing yards) and Anthony Hankerson (115 rushing yards) have both eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the Beavers this afternoon.
    • 1:13: Oregon State starting linebacker Isaiah Chisom was ejected for targeting after he put a big hit on Idaho State receiver Michael Shulikov. As a result, Chisom will miss the first half of next week's game at San Diego State.
    • 1:04: Idaho State's Hunter Hays linked up with Michael Shulikov for a 15-yard touchdown pass.

    Halftime: Oregon State 17, Idaho State 9

    Notable Oregon State stats:

    • RB Anthony Hankerson: 82 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries
    • RB Jam Griffin: 89 rushing yards on 14 carries
    • DB Skyler Thomas: seven tackles and one interception

    Second Quarter

    • 15:00: Redshirt freshman Gabarri Johnson took over at quarterback for Oregon State's first drive of the second quarter. He immediately connected with Taz Reddicks on his first throw of the day.
    • 9:34: A promising OSU drive stalled out in Idaho State territory. Everett Hayes came on and drilled a 32-yard field goal to give the Beavers a 10-9 lead.
    • 9:34: Oregon State senior cornerback Kobe Singleton, a highly touted transfer from Liberty, checked into the game for the first time. He dealt with injuries at the start of fall camp but is expected to play a big role for the Beavers this season.
    • 4:41: Idaho State attempted to convert on fourth-and-3 at the Oregon State 30. The Beavers' defense rallied for a big stop to take over possession.
    • 4:40: Gevani McCoy returned at quarterback for the Beavers after Gabarri Johnson was in on the previous drive.
    • 0:27: Anthony Hankerson found the end zone on a 6-yard run for his second touchdown of the day to push Oregon State's lead to 17-9.

    First Quarter

    • 11:36: Jam Griffin lost a fumble on Oregon State's opening drive on a rush up the middle. Idaho State recovered it and will take over at its own 16.
    • 8:37: Skyler Thomas grabbed an interception on an intermediate Idaho State pass over the middle for OSU's first pick of the season.
    • 5:55: Anthony Hankerson put the Beavers on the board with a 15-yard run for the first OSU touchdown of the season.
    • 1:09: Oregon State attempted to punt from its own 17. But long snapper Peyton Hogan launched the ball over punter Josh Green's head, and out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
    • 0:00: Idaho State's Kobe Tracy linked up with Christian Fredericksen for a 35-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the quarter to give the Bengals a 9-7 lead.

    Pregame observations

    • Starting receiver Darrius Clemons is in shorts and did not go through pregame warmups. It appears that he will not play today.
    • Running back Anthony Hankerson is in full pads going through warmups. He was dinged up during the early portion of fall camp.
    • LSU defensive line transfer Tygee Hill is in sweats during warmups; he's out for today's game. He wasn't listed on the two-deep that Oregon State released earlier this week.

    Oregon State names Gevani McCoy starting quarterback for Beavers season-opener

    The Oregon State Beavers have settled on their starting quarterback.

    During his Monday press conference, Oregon State head coach Trent Bray said OSU will roll with Gevani McCoy as its starting signal-caller for Saturday's Week 1 showdown with Idaho State.

    "It was real close in fall camp," Bray said. "Just kind of the last week, Gevani was on a big up-tick. Separated himself a little bit and that's what led to the decision."
