    Staunton school board to elect officers

    STAUNTON – The Staunton City School Board will appoint a board chair, vice-chair, clerk, and deputy clerk during the upcoming July 8 meeting.

    Alongside the appointments, the board will consider a superintendent stand in, for when the superintendent cannot be present for a meeting, and consider which school board members will be assigned to which duties.

    The board will also hold a public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2025 budget, followed by consideration for updates to 2024-2025 Student Handbook & Code of Conduct and surplus property sales. The agenda is online .

    Stuarts Draft quarry returns to Augusta zoning board for the third time

    VERONA – D.M. Conner is returning to the Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals for the third time in as many months.

    After the stone quarry found itself in the middle of an ordinance debate in February , owners Benny Conner and Sharon Conner applied to expand quarry operations into untouched parts of their property.

    The board tabled the operation expansion vote in May, waiting until after they gave D.M. Conner time to reclaim land they quarried without a permit in June. The Wednesday hearing will continue the discussion begun in May, deciding if the quarry can expand or not.

    The board of zoning appeals agenda lists public hearings on the following:

    • Lisa Jo Roberts requested a permit to have a short term rental on property she owns located at 3912 Stuarts Draft Highway, Stuarts Draft.
    • Tracy Bradley requested a permit to expand a non-conforming dwelling no closer to the road and no closer to the side yard than the existing dwelling on property owned by Sylvia Jean Henderson (Life), located at 435 Entry School Road.
    • Linda Burkholder, agent for Cloverfield, LLC, requested a permit to have a short term vacation rental on property owned by Cloverfield, LLC, located at 376 Mullins Lane.
    • Marcy Reed requested a permit to lease space for a boat repair business with outdoor storage and display of boats for sale on property owned by Nu[1]Valley Enterprises, Inc., located at 5086 Lee Jackson Highway.
    • Austin Nicely, agent for The Batting Cave, LLC, requested a permit to construct a building for indoor batting cages and small scale baseball/softball field for seasonal use on property owned by The Batting Cave, LLC, located on the west side of East Side Highway (Route 340).
    • Bryan Philip and Sarah Grady Plemmons requested a permit to construct a building for weddings and special events with outdoor storage of food trucks and to have short term vacation rentals in the existing dwellings on property they own, located at 2991, 2995, and 2971 Old Parkersburg Turnpike.
    • Walda R. Massie requested a permit to have a detached accessory dwelling unit where the owner of record does not personally reside on property she owns, located at 153 Drifting Lane.
    • Sharon G. Conner, agent for D.M. Conner, Inc., requested a permit to expand the existing mining operation on property she owns, located at 245 Oak Lane.
