STAUNTON – The Staunton branch of the NAACP announced in a press release its annual Freedom Fund Banquet is set to take place on Aug. 3 at Hotel 24 South in Staunton.

This year’s event, themed “Working Together Defines Our Future,” will honor the achievements and contributions of individuals committed to advancing civil rights and social justice in the Staunton area.

"We are excited this year to present six prestigious awards of honor to members of our Staunton community who have gone above and beyond to support our community," the NAACP Staunton branch said in the release.

The Freedom Fund Banquet is a cornerstone event for the NAACP, serving as a significant fundraiser to support the organization’s legal defense fund, ongoing efforts to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights for all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

“The Freedom Fund Banquet is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress we’ve made, recognize those who have paved the way, and inspire future generations to continue the work of the NAACP,” said Kenneth Venable, president of the NAACP Staunton Branch.

The evening will feature a keynote address from the Reverend Cozy Bailey, president of the Virginia NAACP and the NAACP Virginia State Conference. Bailey served as a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps and received the Navy Commendation Medal, Defense Meritorious Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit before later retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
