Jamestown Public Schools Looking At Hiring More Library Media Specialists
The Jamestown School Board President is calling on the district to hire new library media specialists for their elementary schools. Board President Paul Abbott said he and Board Vice President Joe Pawelski have met with Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker about the issue, saying that back after financial difficulties around 2010, several library media specialists were let go, “You know, one of the things we continuously hear about is reading competency by third grade is such an important measure for student success in graduation. And I certainly, in talking to Dr. Whitaker, would like us to explore replacing one or two of those positions.”

TCC Health is holding the picnics in celebration of National Community Health Center Week. The events will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Jamestown Community Picnic will happen on August 6 at Community Helping Hands at the Gateway Center on Water Street. The Dunkirk Community Picnic will be held on August 8 at the Salvation Army on Central Avenue.
Capacity Crowd Turns Out for Gerry Rodeo's Opening Night
A reported capacity crowd of enthusiastic fans filled the stands Wednesday evening on the opening performance of 79th annual Gerry Rodeo. Rodeo spokesman Paul Cooley reports that a total of 215 professional cowboys and cowgirls from more than 30 states as far away as Texas and Montana, as well as Canada, entered this week's competition for a share of $50,000 in prize money. Meanwhile, the kitchen crew on the grounds reported approximately 660 barbecue beef dinners were served on opening night and will continue to be served each night from 5:00-8:00 PM. The rodeo continues through Saturday, with all eight events contested in the area starting at 8:00 PM.
