STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (WTRF) — Renovations and periodic inspections have been taking place on the Market Street Bridge since it was closed in December 2023.

During this time, commuters and businesses alike who rely on the bridge have suffered a noticeable toll.

Mayor of Steubenville, Jerry Barilla, says it’s been an economic problem since traffic has been re-routed.

It’s been a negative thing for us, we’ve noticed a huge amount of traffic decline since that bridge has been down and I’m sure some of the businesses downtown have suffered from it.”

The bridge is currently on a three-month inspection cycle. The Division of Highways found that the bridge’s steel support cables have been weakening, even with no traffic.
