During this time, Continental was known for its line of “Little Shortcake Fingers” filled with strawberry cream. However, these cakes were only available during strawberry season, leaving the equipment idle for much of the year.

In 1930, James Dewar, a clever baker at Continental, sought to make better use of the machinery. Dewar’s idea was simple but brilliant: why not create a cream-filled cake that could be produced year-round? He replaced the strawberry filling with banana cream, which was more accessible and had a longer shelf life. Thus, the Twinkie was born. The name “Twinkie” reportedly came to Dewar as he drove past a billboard for “Twinkle Toe Shoes,” and the catchy name stuck.

Twinkies quickly became a hit. Their popularity soared during the Great Depression due to their affordability and long shelf life. For just five cents, customers could enjoy a two-pack of the delicious snack. This economic accessibility made Twinkies a favorite among Americans during tough financial times.

The Twinkie went through its first significant change during World War II. Due to a banana shortage, the company switched to vanilla cream filling, which proved to be even more popular. The vanilla filling became the standard, cementing the Twinkie’s place in American culture.

Over the decades, Twinkies have faced challenges, including health concerns and changing consumer preferences. The most notable crisis came in 2012 when Hostess filed for bankruptcy, leading to a temporary cessation of Twinkie production. The outcry from fans was so strong that a group of investors bought the company, reviving Twinkies in 2013.

Beyond its humble beginnings, the Twinkie has become a symbol of nostalgia and indulgence. It has inspired countless cultural references, from movies to music, and even inspired a deep-fried version that became a sensation at state fairs. Despite changes in the snack food landscape, the Twinkie has endured, a testament to its enduring appeal.
