    Nordic skiing: Peterson, Holmes chosen MVPs for Ponies

    Seniors Carson Peterson and Bailey Holmes were recently honored as the Most Valuable Athlete(s) for the Stillwater boys and girls Nordic skiing teams.

    Peterson was one of nine All-Suburban East Conference performers for the Stillwater boys, a list that also includes George Nelson, Ethan Foote, Wyatt Wolfe, Moses Schollott, Talbot Ward, Kyle McBride, Henry March and Charlie Sanderson.

    Will Foote received honorable mention all-conference recognition for a team that won its third straight conference championship also held off Mounds View by 19 points to win its section straight Section 4 crown. The Ponies placed fifth in the state meet, which was their third straight trip to state and ninth in the past 10 seasons.

    Peterson was the individual section medalist and also placed 14th in the individual state pursuit.

    Holmes was joined by junior teammate Stella Powell in earning all-state honors after placing 18th and 20th in the state pursuit. Annika Fuhrmann, Greta Shockey, Greta Widenbrant, Heidi Stoffregen, Adam Burns, Eloise Powell, Sophia Saldin and Cate Koelzer joined Holmes and Stella Powell in earning all-conference honors for a team that repeated as the SEC and Section 4 champion before placing seventh at state.

    A total of six Ponies earned Academic All-State honors, including Sanderson, Will Foote, Ethan Foote and McBride for the boys and Fuhrmann and Burns for the girls. Each team also received an Academic Gold Award from the Minnesota State Coaches Association.

    Ethan Foote and Fuhrman were this year’s recipients of the Leadership Award while Josiah Bliss and Ingrid Nelson were selected the Best New Skier(s).

    Wolfe and Shockey each garnered the Most Improved Skier Award.

    Leo Dybvig was presented the Bob and Diane Hagstrom Scholarship for the boys team while Fuhrmann received the scholarship for the Stillwater girls.

    Also announced at the team’s postseason awards banquet is that Nelson, McBride, Ward, Owen Holroyd and Davis Rolstad will serve as captains for next year’s squad for the boys and Adelaide Bielke, Koelzer, Shockey and Sofia Omann will perform those duties for the girls.
