Girls golf: Ponies place second at conference tournament

In its final tune-up before the Section 4AAA tournament, the Stillwater girls golf team delivered its top performance of the season while placing second in the Suburban East Conference Championships on Thursday, May 23 at Oak Glen Golf Club.

The Ponies posted a score of 341 to finish just four shots behind leader and overall conference champion East Ridge (337). Forest Lake (349) and Woodbury (353) followed in third and fourth.

The runner-up showing was Stillwater’s top finish in a conference event this season, bettering the third-place finishes in nine-hole matches at North Oaks and Tanners Brook. The strong finish also allowed the Ponies to move into a tie with Forest Lake for fourth place in the conference standings with 77 points, trailing only the Raptors (118), Mounds View (94) and White Bear Lake (93).

Stillwater placed four players among the top 10 at the conference tourney, led by Addison eighth-grader Addison Schinka in a tie for fourth place with an 82. Sophomore Sam Schinka and senior Kylie Voight tied for eighth place with matching 86s and freshman Nora Roberts completed the scoring with an 87, which was good enough for 10th place.

Senior Vyan Abdullah (94) and junior Jenna Voight (98) placed 27th and 32nd for the Ponies.

Cretin-Derham Hall’s Lily Vincelli claimed medalist honors with a 72 and also finished as the league’s top individual based on scoring average.

Sam Schinka and Roberts each secured all-conference honors with their scoring average throughout the season while Addison Schinka, Abdullah and Kylie Voight each earned honorable mention all-conference recognition.

The Ponies are scheduled to compete in the Section 4AAA tournament at Goodrich Golf Course on May 30-31.
