Stillwater Elks Batters Up Challenge set for Aug. 10

The Stillwater Elks Lodge #179 is sponsoring the Elks Batters Up Batting Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Stillwater Area High School. Registration and/or check-in begins at 9 a.m., with competition in five age groups taking place between 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

There is no fee to participate. On-site registration is available on site, but preregistration is encouraged at www.mnelks.org/BattersUp.html. The competition is open to boys and girls ages 5-15, divided into five age groups — 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bat and helmet. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each age group.

Each participant will compete against children in the same age group by hitting balls for distance. The boys division will hit baseballs and the girls division will hit either baseballs or softballs. Participants are given up to five warm-up swings and will then get 10 swings to hit for distance. Participants accumulate points based on the distance each hit earns.

This local competition is one of nine being held across the state this summer. The winner in each division will advance to the state competition on Aug. 24 in Gilman, Minn.

SAHS fall sports registration starts Aug. 1

Most Stillwater Area High School fall sports teams are about a month from their first practices, but registration is set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 1. Registration takes place on-line www.goponies.org.

Athletes gearing up for the season should ensure their Sports Qualifying Physical Exam is current. SQPEs are good for three years from the date of exam, but may not expire during the season for which you are registering. Athletes needing assistance with athletic participation fees — educational benefits cover more than just athletics and school meals — can apply online or by downloading and submitting a form available through SchoolCafe.

Specific information for each sport is available at the SAHS Athletics website (www.goponies.org), including coach contact information, informational meetings and additional information.

Schedules can be found at www.suburbaneast.org.
