    Stockton Police collect hundreds of firearms in gun buyback event

    (FOX40.COM) — Stockton Police said over 160 firearms were collected at its gun buyback event on Saturday.

    A total of 167 guns, eight of which were illegal, were collected at the end of the four-hour event at a parking lot on 300 North Harrison Street.

    “The purpose of this event is to collect firearms that were no longer wanted, to prevent them from landing in the wrong hands and turning into crime guns if they are stolen, ” police said in a Facebook post.

    Buyback amounts were given via gift cards that worth approximately worth a combined $35,000. No money was given for non-operable guns, but police said those were accepted.

    People who turned in firearms were not required to identify themselves and were going to remain anonymous. Police said all firearms will be destroyed after the event.
