Make Winona a swamp again
… In the extreme high water of 1844, the sandy Wapasha Prairie seemed almost covered with water, a large body running into the Winona Lake from the sloughs above, making an island of Winona…. - Lafayette H. Bunnell, “Winona and its Environs on the Mississippi in Ancient and Modern Days,”...
Fireworks have gone too far
Something has to be done about these fireworks in Winona over the Fourth of July weekend. My whole family was up half the night on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, as well as many other people we know. Our dog and cat were terrorized, as well as many others. My neighbor who’s a veteran has PTSD. He was really suffering. Did the police do anything? I’m surprised there wasn’t a shooting or physical altercation. Enough is enough already. This has gone on far too long.
MnDOT's roundabout-free plan for Hwy. 43
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) shared its updated plan for improvements on Highway 43 in Winona from Mankato Avenue to the interstate bridge with the Winona City Council on Monday. The construction project, slated for 2028, will repave the highway, add left-turn lanes downtown, make improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists, and create a sidewalk on the south side of Sarnia Street. MnDOT previously considered including downtown roundabouts in the project but ultimately scrapped the idea.
Citizens want change; we get more of the same
What is the City Council doing? They are moving forward with the police station while ignoring the city/county opinion on their own tax dollars. We have City Council meetings, don’t we? Yet time and time again, they move forward without listening to the people. Are they going to pay for it themselves and just tax the people in the building that works there? I think not. Why don't we put it on the ballot for us to decide?
GRSF is vital part of Winona community
I could not agree more with Frances Edstrom’s review of GRSF’s production of “Hamlet” (Winona Post, July 3). There can be no doubt that Winona’s own Great River Shakespeare Festival (GRSF), now entering its third decade, is creating great art in this community, year in and year out.

History is Present: From armory to museum
Have you ever visited the Winona County History Center? Part of the current building was originally an armory with fortress-like architecture, and it still protects our history today. The story of its metamorphosis from military reserve to present-day museum icon started like lightning – literally. In the early hours...

The school district says the referendum is split into two separate funding requests. The first would ask for property owners to...
Houston Ambulance Now State Training Center
At their July 8 meeting, the Houston City Council recognized ambulance employees Dave Runningen and Chris Cox for their impressive 40 years of service to the community on the ambulance. In addition, Anna Frauenkron shared that the ambulance has now officially become a training center for the state of Minnesota. With that, the ambulance crew can present EMT, EMR and refresher courses right in Houston.

Our Towns Thrive When Everyone Is Welcome
I love the cultural and civic institutions that make our rural communities such a great place to live. From the post office, to restaurants, the county fair, local stores, to public schools, public libraries, and our newspaper. These institutions make our social lives richer. So, it was with great interest that I watched an editorial back-and-forth involving my two favorite institutions: public libraries in the Fillmore County Journal. For those of you who don’t voraciously read local commentary (you really are missing out) let me catch you up: In the middle of June, Ben Bisbach wrote eloquently about his experience attending a public meeting at the Harmony Public Library in which some residents petitioned the library to ban children’s books about gay people. The library declined to do so. Last week, Nancy Earndhardt responded to Ben’s letter, encouraging the library to ban books about homosexuality and generally indicated that she believed homosexuality should not exist.
