A school occupational therapist once envisioned herself operating a recreational hub for young people who are neurodivergent, and now she can look out over a new Stow gymnasium and see the fruits of her determination.

A zip line. Swings. A calming room. A space for infants and toddlers. An art room. Interactive toys. Children and teens with autism and sensory issues comfortably playing and interacting at their own pace.

Sammy Howard-Cantu says her We Rock The Spectrum Kid's Gym at 3087 Graham Road provides a resource that's missing from many communities.

"There is a need for facilities like this. I wish this was in every city," she said.

The gym, which celebrated its opening July 13, is the chain's second in Northeast Ohio. Howard-Cantu had an epiphany when she talked to the Mayfield Heights location's owner before that gym opened about a year ago.

"I knew this what I wanted to do," she said.

Going to a traditional children's gym can be challenging for neurodivergent children due to the noise and high levels of activity, Howard-Cantu said.

She pointed out a phrase, painted in deep red, near the zip line: "A Place Where You Never Have to Say I'm Sorry."

"That's our motto here," she said.

The space is available for neurotypical children up to age 12, with no upper age limit for those who are neurodivergent, Howard-Cantu said. The facility even has an adult changing table. There also are sensory-sensitive hours for those who really struggle with sensory issues, which allows for up to six people.

We Rock the Spectrum is not just a safe play area for youth, but also a facility for parents to interact and have fun with their children, plus meet and befriend other parents.

"We've seen a lot of friendships start here," said Mike Cantu, Howard-Cantu's husband.

We Rock The Spectrum has 166 gyms in 33 states and eight countries, according to the franchise. Howard-Cantu said she focused on activities and tools that will help children with self-regulation, interactive play, socialization and sensory interpretation. Everything is sensory-based.

"Every toy, every item is purposeful," she said. "Most don't have batteries or make noise."

Their location at Crossroads at Fishcreek Shopping Center so far has worked out well, allowing them to not only operate their gym but also work with other local businesses, Howard-Cantu said.

"Stow has been so welcoming," Howard-Cantu said. "This property just fit our needs. We can picture kids playing here, then going to go get a doughnut or ice cream." She said the gym has partnered with local businesses for party options.

In addition to the gym area, We Rock The Spectrum also offers classes such as Zumbini and space for parties, Howard-Cantu said.

There also are opportunities for volunteering for those interested in working with children, Howard-Cantu said.
