TULARE COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE) – An investigation is underway after a suspect who was arrested Sunday died while in custody, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Deputies say they were called to a home invasion in Strathmore where they learned people inside the home were able to restrain the suspect until their arrival.

Investigators say following his arrest, during his pre-booking process the suspect needed medical clearance due to erratic behavior and was transported to a local hospital.

On Monday, deputies say when the suspect received medical clearance at the hospital, he was taken back to the South County Detention Facility. His leg restraints were taken off and he began to show erratic and combative behavior once again, according to officials.

The Sheriff’s Office says CPR was initiated and an ambulance was called. He was resuscitated and taken back to the local hospital, where he suffered a medical emergency and died, the Sheriff’s Office reports. The cause of death is under investigation.

Deputies say the identity of the deceased will not be released until the next of kin is notified.

    This is an ongoing investigation.
