Despite rumors to the contrary, Paramount didn’t keep Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar IMAX re-release from happening. The sci-fi movie will still hit IMAX and regular theaters – just later than originally planned.

The news comes from Variety , hours after the film internet became incandescent with rage over completely unfounded rumors that Paramount, without Christopher Nolan’s knowledge or consent, destroyed all existing 70mm prints of Interstellar after the film's first run in 2014.

It started with a vague post on the Box Office Theory forums site , where a user who calls themselves MrPink mentioned “drama” surrounding the re-release.

“I've been informed by a close source of mine that the Interstellar IMAX re-release that was planned for this fall has likely been cancelled outside of a very select group of venues,” they said. “There's some drama going on behind-the-scenes over this that I won't divulge the details of. Let's just say that someone in particular is really upset and leave it at that.”

That snowballed into the final version. Nolan demanded Paramount make new 70mm prints for the IMAX release, except he didn’t because little, if any, of this was true, and only a few select venues would be able to play it.

Variety’s sources said that Paramount’s prints were damaged, but only by time. The production company reportedly has more copies of Interstellar in its vaults than its other films.

Whatever the cause for the Interstellar delay, it will release in theaters and IMAX again – on Dec. 6, 2024, instead of its earlier, anticipated September 2024 date.
