George R.R. Martin Slams HBO’s House of the Dragon

George R.R. Martin is not holding back his feelings about HBO’s House of the Dragon .

The House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones author recently published a blog post airing his grievances with HBO’s adaptation. That post may have been a little too honest for some people’s likings, as it has since been deleted.

In particular, Martin has beef with showrunner Ryan Condal, whose changes to Blood and Cheese were not to his liking. “When Ryan Condal first told me what he meant to do, ages ago (back in 2022, might be) I argued against it, for all these reasons,” writes Martin.

In House of the Dragon ’s season 2 premiere, a child character is killed by two assassins called Blood and Cheese. However, it differs from Martin’s Fire & Blood book, because the show omits another child, Aegon and Helaena Targaryen’s youngest son, Prince Maelor

However, Martin acknowledges Condal’s reasoning, writing, “Losing the ‘Helaena’s Choice’ beat did weaken the scene, but not to any great degree.” He continues, “Moreover, Ryan assured me that we were not losing Prince Maelor, simply postponing him. Queen Helaena could still give birth to him in season three.”

HBO actually responded to Martin’s post, with a spokesman issuing the following statement to Variety , “There are few greater fans of George R.R. Martin and his book ‘ Fire & Blood ’ than the creative team on ‘ House of the Dragon ,’ both in production and at HBO. Commonly, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the showrunner ultimately is required to make difficult choices about the characters and stories the audience will follow. We believe that Ryan Condal and his team have done an extraordinary job and the millions of fans the series has amassed over the first two seasons will continue to enjoy it.”

House of the Dragon is already renewed for a third season. Meanwhile, here are the biggest dragons in House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones - ranked .
