STUART − An elementary school-aged boy was taken to a local hospital Wednesday after experiencing an apparent medical emergency at Sailfish Splash Waterpark, a Stuart Fire Rescue official said Thursday.

First responders went to the waterpark at 931 S.E. Ruhnke Street at 2:12 p.m. Wednesday for what was dispatched as a drowning, Fire Rescue Operations Chief Jon Huneycutt said. He said it turned out to be a medical emergency as opposed to a drowning.

“When we got there the child was awake and able to answer our questions,” Huneycutt said.

He said the youth was seen in some kind of distress in the lazy river. Lifeguards pulled him out and were rendering aid.

Huneycutt said the child was taken to a local hospital.
