Nansemond Indian Nation gears up for 36th annual Pow Wow

Nansemond Indian Nation is set to host the 36th Annual Pow Wow this Saturday at Mattanock Town. Nansemond Indian Nation Tribal Chief Keith F. Anderson says the nation expects a record crowd this year.

The 36th Annual Pow Wow will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18. Following the first Pow Wow held on ancestral land in 1988, the annual event continues to celebrate Native American heritage while bringing people together.

“ Attendees can expect a very vibrant, exciting, and inclusive American Indian event featuring tribal representation from across the United States and Canada, many of those who participate as craftspersons, interpreters, dancers, singers, and food vendors,” Anderson said. “There will also be an assortment of education/community vendors, exhibits, and the opportunity to participate in social dances throughout the day. Last year’s event attracted over 7,000, and we expect a record-breaking crowd this year.”

This year’s celebration will be especially poignant as back in May, the Nansemond Indian Nation received a land transfer from the City of Suffolk. Anderson says that a special recognition of the Mattanock Town acquisition is planned that day, with special guests and others supporting the occasion. A two-day event, Anderson also says each day will have a variety of dance specials.

“We as indigenous persons, especially those from Virginia tribes, are not prehistoric. We are very relevant, dynamic, and an integral force in American society,” Anderson said. “As other races, we are very diversified in appearance, beliefs, customs, and professions. Despite the obligation to preserve indigenous life and traditions, our events are inclusive and celebrate the similarities, not differences, of each other.”
