Suffolk seeks community input in search for next police chief

The City of Suffolk has initiated a nationwide search for its next police chief. The position is currently filled by interim chief James “Danny” Buie, who was appointed back in October when then chief Al Chandler announced his retirement.  To facilitate this process, the City has enlisted the services of Raftelis, a specialized search firm focusing on recruiting executives for law enforcement and municipal government roles. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the City seeks input from its residents to ensure that the selected candidate possesses the necessary skills and experience, resonating with Suffolk’s values and priorities.

Residents can participate in an online survey tailored for the community to express their thoughts and preferences regarding the desired qualities of the new police chief. Feedback from both the community and Suffolk Police personnel surveys will significantly influence the selection committee’s decision-making process, aiming to find a candidate capable of leading, inspiring, and supporting the Suffolk Police Department in its mission to serve and protect the community.

For residents without reliable internet access, Suffolk Public Library locations are open, and staff are available to assist with completing the survey. The survey will remain open until April 19, 2024.

Morgan Memorial Library is located at 443 West Washington Street, North Suffolk Library at 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road, and Chuckatuck Library at 5881 Godwin Boulevard.
