The Suffolk Treasurer’s Office is celebrating its accreditation status.

Presented by the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia (TAV) on Wednesday, June 26, Treasurer Ronald H. Williams and Chief Deputy Treasurer Andrew Owen received the accreditation as part of the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia’s annual conference in Falls Church. Overseen by the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia, the Office Accreditation program is a voluntary professional certificate program and while it is not required for any treasurer’s office to be accredited, the status acknowledges the office meeting statewide best practices for performance in treasury management.

The accreditation process sees offices having to successfully pass an outside audit with no findings of material weaknesses. Likewise, the process requires proof of continuing education which includes an ethics course by the treasurer and educational requirements for all staff. Accredited offices are also required to have written policies placed for addressing areas that include personnel, customer service and delinquent collections. In a statement, Williams expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“I am delighted to report that my office has once again met the accreditation criteria,” Williams said.

Owen noted the accreditation as testament to the office’s continued work for the City of Suffolk.

“This accreditation serves as confirmation that we are operating in the best manner possible with respect to the collection, investment, and management of taxpayer dollars, which is highly beneficial to the citizens of Suffolk and to the City of Suffolk’s overall financial health,” Owen said.
