Third-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s will play number five Lynnville-Sully Friday afternoon in Carroll in the 1A state baseball championship game. Remsen St. Mary’s beat Mason City Newman 7-4 Wednesday night in the longest tournament game ever played. It took 14 innings to decide it and included a nearly one hour rain delay. The Hawks will play in their third straight title game and will be in search of a second straight championship.

Megan Johnson is Central’s NCAA Woman of the Year nominee
Aplington-Parkersburg alum Megan Johnson is Central College’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The award recognizes graduating female athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their college careers. Johnson finished her kinesiology degree with a 3.94 GPA. She’s going to graduate school at the University of Oklahoma to use her final year of athletic eligibility.
7 KMAland athletes, 1 coach to compete in 2024 IHSBCA All-Star Series
(KMAland) -- Seven KMAland athletes and one coach will compete in the 2024 Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series in Pella August 1st through 3rd. Coon Rapids-Bayard’s Kolby Culbertson, Kuemper Catholic’s Carter Putney and Eli Christensen of Ankeny Christian will play for the Small Schools West team. Moravia’s Wyatt Throckmorton is on the Small Schools East squad.

PELLA—For the second year in a row, Jacob Moffett (senior, Mount Pleasant) was named a Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America. To be eligible for selection, an NCAA Division III player must be a sophomore, junioror senior, participate in at least half of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 79.0 and a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. There were 208 players from 81 Division III schools cited. Moffett graduated with a 3.29 GPA with a finance major. He’s a four-time letterwinner and recorded a 78.1 stroke average this year.…

Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hosting 48th Annual All-Star Series in Pella Next Week
The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association is set to hold their 48th annual All-Star Series in Pella next week. The event features four teams made up of 2024 graduates who were considered among the best high school baseball players in Iowa. Dave Rock with the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association says that seniors selected to play in the series are divided into four teams based on geography and their school’s enrollment.
PACE Alliance Golf Outing to Support Holiday Heroes
The Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance is hosting its annual golf outing in August. Mary Mansfield with the PACE Alliance says this year’s theme is “Oh Christmas Tee,” and proceeds from the event will benefit the Pella Police Department’s Holiday Heroes program, which brings the city’s first responders together with children to shop for Christmas presents in December. The PACE Alliance Golf Outing will be held on Friday, August 16th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bos Landen Golf Course. While spots are full for the event, Mansfield says they are still looking for partners to support the event. Find more details here.
PCM Softball to Graduate Just One Senior
The PCM softball team will graduate just one senior from their 2024 roster. The Mustangs defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday in the consolation round of the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge. The lone senior on the Mustangs roster this season was Lark Drake who will now graduate. Drake was a crucial part of the Mustangs team this year after not playing her junior season. PCM also just had one junior on their roster in Addison Steenhoek. The Mustangs played six eighth graders in their game on Tuesday. With such a young team, PCM has the potential to be successful for many years to come.
