2024 Iowa State Fair Skillathon Contest Results Announced
AMES, Iowa – This year, 192 youth from 49 Iowa counties participated in Iowa State University Extension and Outreach skillathons for meat goats, sheep and swine at the Iowa State Fair. The swine and sheep skillathons took place on Aug. 11 and a goat skillathon was held on Aug. 14.

Newton Library Roof Replacement Finished
The full roof replacement on the Newton Public Library is finished. Library Director Nicole Terry says she’s awaiting the final paperwork on the $772,000 project. Once that’s in, the Newton City Council can approve the final payment to Hopkins Roofing in Pella. The company was awarded the replacement contract in December 2022, and installed a standing seam metal roof. Terry notes the color of the massive new roof is exactly the same as the original.
319 workers out of jobs as Altoona Smithfield plant closes
ALTOONA, Iowa — Friday is the last day of production at the Smithfield meat processing facility in Altoona. The company announced this summer that the ham boning facility at 612 Adventureland Drive NE, would close and 314 workers would be laid off. According to Iowa WARN, a state-run log of notices of layoffs, 319 employees will be affected.
