SUMMIT, NJ – The emergency department at Overlook Medical Center’s main campus in Summit has been selected as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s 2024 Lantern Award® for demonstrating excellence in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research performance.
The Lantern Award showcases the Overlook Medical Center Emergency Services, Summit Campus’s accomplishments in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care. As part of the application, EDs are encouraged to share stories that highlight a commitment to patient care, as well as the well-being of nursing staff. The award serves as a visible symbol of Overlook’s commitment to quality, safety and a healthy work environment.
Overlook’s Summit emergency department is one of 94 EDs nationwide recognized in 2024. The award lasts for a three-year cycle, after which emergency departments are eligible to apply again.
This is the Summit ED’s second consecutive award cycle. Overlook’s satellite ED in Union, which is seamlessly connected to the Summit ED, is also the only emergency department in the world to receive the Emergency Nurses Association’s Lantern Award for every three-year cycle since the award’s inception in 2011. Union received its most recent Lantern Award in 2023.
“I am incredibly proud of the care, research and collaboration the emergency department team at Overlook Medical Center consistently provides to our communities,” said Heather A. Veltre, DNP, MS, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Overlook Medical Center. “The multiple consecutive Lantern Award honors for our team by the Emergency Nurses Association further validate our commitment to excellence”.
“The collaboration between our emergency department’s physicians and nurses is the key to the exemplary outcomes we achieve for our patients,” said Andre Bonnet, MD, interim chair of emergency medicine. “Our nurses’ high level of practice and their dedication to quality improvement consistently raise the bar of care at Overlook.”
Overlook’s Lantern Award will be on display in the Summit emergency department. As a recipient, Overlook Medical Center Emergency Services, Summit Campus will be recognized in upcoming ENA publications, on the ENA website and during Emergency Nursing 2024, the association’s annual conference in Las Vegas, Sept. 4-7.
