    Park softball enters section swinging red-hot bats

    Four straight doubles nearly completes comeback against Chaska

    Softball and baseball seasons are quickly approaching the end of the all to brief spring season with section playoffs starting this week for softball.

    Baseball wraps up the regular season this week before starting section play next week.

    Park softball wrapped up the regular season with three games in three days last week to head into section play with a 9-10 regular season record following a 12-10 loss to Chanhassen on May 16.

    The day after an 8-7 win over Tartan on May 15 as Chaska walked off a 12-11 loss on May 14.

    Against Chanhassen, Park scored three runs in the first, second and third innings before adding one more run in the fourth inning to build a commanding 10-6 lead going into the sixth inning.

    Eight different Orioles picked up a hit with leadoff batter Rowan Jansen nailing a pair of hits. Eva Taybior and Azlyn McDonnell each had a double and two walks. Taybior scored three times.

    Tabior, McDonnell, Ella Nguyen and Jansen also stole a base and McDonnell, Taybior and Presley Loberg each drove in a pair of runs.

    In the 8-7 win over Tartan, also at Aquila, featured a five-run rally in the sixth inning to take the final 8-7 lead for good.

    The big final inning began with three hits in a row from Bella Miller, Ella Tousignault and Gabbie Fadden before Jansen’s RBI ground out made it 7-5. Sydney Gallentine followed with a hard ground ball to left field to bring in Fadden to pull the Orioles within a run of the lead, 7-6.

    After Taybior was out on a dropped third strike for the second out of the inning, Gabbie Loberg drew an eight-pitch walk, coming back from an 0-2 count to earn the free trip to first base.

    Olivia Grefe drove a base hit up the middle to tie the game at 7-7 as Nguyen scored from second base as a pinch runner for Gallentine.

    Presley Loberg followed with an line drive to left field, allowing McDonnell to score the go-ahead run, 8-7 with two outs.

    McDonnell pitched the opening four innings, allowing five runs on six hits. She issued two walks and struck out one before Gabbie Loberg worked the final three innings in relief to pick up the win. She limited Tartan to one run on six hits.

    The Metro West Conference meeting on May 14 at Chaska featured 24 combined hits, generating 23 runs as the Hawks held on for a 12-11 win, despite the Orioles rallying for six runs in the seventh inning to end the game.

    Chaska opened a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

    Trailing 12-5 heading into the final inning, Park used back-to-back-to-back-to-back doubles from Miller, Fadden, Jansen and Nguyen before Taybior launched a two-run home run to pull within a run, 12-11. McDonnell reached on an error before two outs ended the rally one run short.

    McDonnell and Gabbie Loberg combined in the pitcher’s circle striking out six and issuing four walks.

    Section 6AAAA

    Pamela Park in Edina is the site for all Section 6AAAA play which started Monday afternoon with the opening round contests of the double-elimination format.

    No. 1 Armstrong hosts the winner of No. 8 Washburn/No. 9 Southwest; No. 5 Park faces No. 4 Kennedy; No. 6 Hopkins vs. No. 3 Wayzata; No. 7 Roosevelt/South vs. No. 2 Edina.

    Section championships will be decided on May 30 at 4:30 p.m. and if a second game is needed it will be played at 6:30 p.m., weather pending.
