Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week. The El Paso Museum of History will unveil its latest exhibit, “El Paso’s Homegrown: The Korean War,” at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 27. The free event at the museum, 501 N. Santa Fe St., marks the anniversary of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement and will delve into the experiences of El Pasoans during the Korean War, a conflict that took place from 1950 to1953. Visitors can explore artifacts from the conflict, learn about Korean history and culture, and understand the ongoing relationship between the United States and Korea. The exhibit is part of the museum’s “El Paso’s Homegrown” series, which began in 2022, and will be on display through July 2025.

SEATTLE - More than a year after he shot at a U.S. Border Patrol agent, a federal judge sentenced Roberto Esquivel to 19 years in prison, the U.S. District Attorney of Ney Mexico announced on July 19. Esquivel was convicted of attempted murder of an officer, aggravated assault of an officer with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm and conspiracy to transport migrants in the U.S. illegally.

Entomologists keep hearing anecdotal reports of fewer fireflies, leading to fears that the summer flash was fading. It’s due to habitat loss, pesticides, light pollution and climate change. Experts say the flickering glow of fireflies is too important to lose, but too small to notice. Later this year the federal government is likely to put the first firefly species on the endangered species list. Scientists say some fireflies species are doing well, but several are not. And there are many species they just don’t know about.

Police make arrest in gang-related shooting from Saturday
