A Wisconsin man died this week while scuba diving in Lake Superior within Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park.

At 1 p.m. Thursday, John Nousaine, 70, of Superior, Wisconsin, was 100 to 150 feet underwater when he suffered the accident, Isle Royale National Park officials said Friday.

Mr. Nousaine was at the park on a vessel with other recreational divers and was exploring the shipwreck of the 525-foot Emperor, a freighter that sank in Lake Superior in 1947.

Neither park officials nor the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office have specified the cause of the accident, nor have they said whether Mr. Nousaine died from drowning or from other causes.

The incident was the park’s first diving-related death in the past 10 years, IRNP spokesperson Chris Amadon told The Detroit News. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
