Nathan Florence Swallowed Alive Surfing Brazilian Death Slab (Video)

Some, in fact all , one might argue, of the world’s foremost slabs are not suitable surf spots for the average wave-rider. But Nathan Florence is not average. And, as Nate's made it his mission to surf the sketchiest, heaviest, deadliest waves on the planet through his self-proclaimed “Slab Tour,” it looks like no nightmare wave is off limits…including Brazil’s hellish deathtrap masquerading as an occasional surf spot, The Shock.

Hence, the latest episode on his ongoing video series of practically un-surfable slabs.

“The team has made it to Brazil,” Nate opens the vid. “Mahine [Florence, Nate’s wife] and I’s first time. And our goal is to surf some slabs. So, the “Slab Tour” has come to Brazil. We’re stoked to be here. The Shock is huge today, but it’s windy. Over the next few days, we’re hoping to surf it, maybe tow it, maybe paddle it. Brazil “Slab Tour” starts now.”

Although he rarely does, Nate opted for the tow option. “It’s pure chaos,” he conceded.

Explaining the wave a bit more, and this day in particular, Nate continued:

“It’s probably different than any slab I’ve ever surfed. There’s a lot more water on the surface moving around. It’s a short slab. But there’s a lot of backwash. If you fall, you end up in this crazy zone with all kinds of rocks.”

And, after day one at The Shock, things didn’t go entirely as planned. Nate only caught two waves, no makes. But he did get swallowed alive in some brutal Brazilian pits. Reflecting on the experience, Nate added:

“So, first time at The Shock. You could say I got the full Shock experience. I got two waves. The first one was really good, but I was a little too deep. Then we tried…but the towing…there was so much wonk, we couldn’t see anything. The ocean was crazy. The chops were as big as the waves. We did the best we could. But The Shock is heavy. These guys are cowboys over here. Whoever started surfing this wave is out of their mind.”

Stay tuned. As Nate teased at the end of the video, the following day, they had another go at The Shock – this time paddling – which went “south very fast."
