    (Surprise Police Department)

The victim in a July 2 Surprise shooting has died, and police are amending the charges against the suspect in the killing to second-degree murder.

De’Von Jones, 18, died July 4, two days after Daniel Majok, 18, was arrested on charges that included aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On Friday, Surprise police said the department is working with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to amend the criminal charges.

The shooting occurred at a home near 168th Avenue and Jenan Drive where officers responded to a call and found a house party with witnesses in the street. They were directed to an 18-year-old man who had gunshot wounds in his upper body.

The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Officers and detectives interviewed dozens of witnesses who indicated the victim was shot during a fight with another man. The suspect pulled out a handgun and fired it at the victim multiple times. He then left the area before officers arrived, according to police.

Investigators found Majok several miles away near his home, and he was taken into custody without incident. He had a firearm, police said.

“During a Miranda interview, Majok admitted to his involvement” in the shooting, police said.
