The higher-education plans of two Surry County students have received a financial boost from a local group.

Aysha Easter of Mount Airy High School and Kayla Wall, Surry Central High School, are the 2024-2025 scholarship recipients of the Surry County Retired School Personnel.

The scholarships of $1,200 each will go toward their studies at Surry Community College, according to Jane Bell, president of the group.

Aysha, known for her visual/fine art talents, plans to pursue a career as an illustrator.

Kayla’s occupational goal is to become an elementary school teacher.

The annual scholarship program involved is the largest project of the Surry County Retired School Personnel.

Recipients are chosen among applications received from the public high schools in Mount Airy, Surry County and Elkin.

Along with planning to attend the local community college, the selection criteria includes character, scholarship, academic promise, financial need, career potential and recommendations.
