All-County Softball: Clinton's Kendall Phillip repeats as Lenawee Player of the Year
CLINTON — When Kendall Phillip joined the Clinton softball team as a freshman, she faced quite a bit of pressure. She knew outsiders, and maybe even some on the team, would talk whether she belonged so early or if she was there because her mother was the coach. She also put pressure on herself, not only because her mother was the coach and to prove naysayers wrong, but her mom was also a standout for Clinton in her playing days.
Game recap: Mud Hens fall 2-0 to Louisville Bats after starter Hurter exits after one pitch
After an ominous start with starting pitcher Brant Hurter exiting with an injury after one pitch, the Toledo Mud Hens filled in admirably on the mound, but could not break through offensively in a 2-0 loss to the Louisville Bats on Sunday at Fifth Third Field. On the game's first pitch, Louisville’s Blake Dunn pulled the ball down the first base line. Toledo first baseman Spencer Torkelson made a nice diving stop and flipped to Hurter who raced over from the mound to cover first for the out. However, Dunn collided with Hurter’s back and sent Hurter to the ground. Hurter attempted a few warmup pitches but could not push off his left leg on his left-handed delivery and was forced to abandon his start. It was a tough break for the 25-year-old, who was coming off six scoreless innings in his previous appearance.
Toledo football fan survey: Share your opinions on the 2024 season
The University of Toledo is in the midst of its most successful stretch in more than two decades. The last time the Rockets appeared in consecutive Mid-American Conference championship games was 2001-02. They will aim for a third straight trip to Detroit this year in the first division-less MAC season since 1996. Despite heavy losses, including a first-round NFL draft pick, the expectations are not tempered. Fans are not planning for a significant drop off after last year’s 8-0 MAC record, which was part of an 11-game winning streak. The month of September will be revealing, even though the two biggest games won’t count in the conference standings -- road trips to Mississippi State and Western Kentucky.
Toledo native Balcar defends Ohio Open title this week

Past Ohio Open champions have won a combined 29 majors and 198 PGA Tour events. That’s why Balcar didn’t focus on the tournament’s history as he came down the stretch last year at Westfield Country Club in Medina. “I wasn’t really thinking about everything that comes with the tournament because that’s usually not a good sign,” the Toledo native said.
