North Adams-Jerome pitcher throws second no-hitter of the season before the playoffs begin

HILLSDALE — Championship season is in full swing for track and field in Hillsdale County. Regional and conference champions have been crowned, and soon there will be MITCA Team State championships to be added to trophy cases for a few teams. Before many of the local student athlete state qualifiers prepare for their journey to the MHSAA LP state finals, there is one last stop they will have to take before making their way over to Kent City or Hudsonville.
Napoleon advances to baseball regionals with victory over Defiance
ARCHBOLD, Ohio — Napoleon defeated Defiance 13-3 on Saturday, winning a Division II district baseball title for the first time since 2011. The No. 2 seed Wildcats (20-9) beat the top-seeded Bulldogs (20-6) at Memorial Park. Napoleon advances to play Huron in a regional semifinal at Bowling Green's Carter Park at 2 p.m. Thursday. Napoleon senior Lucas Gerken went 3-for-4 on Saturday with a home run and five RBIs. Junior Parker Woods had three RBIs, senior Blaine Ford went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, and senior Devin Dietrich was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs, one RBI, and one steal. Senior pitcher Jacob Shadle got the victory, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out three.
Zane Trace boys take third at Division II regional meet, area athletes advance to state
NEW CONCORD − Qualifying for the state track and field meet is an achievement in and of itself, and one that Zane Trace's runners know all too well. But for Charley Clyne, Riley Hartsaugh, Peyton Dotson and Wyatt Vick, their 4x400 relay in the Division II regional meet on Saturday brought a new feeling. For the first time, the four of them have qualified for the state meet in a relay event. Clyne, Hartsaugh, Dotson and Vick placed fourth in the boys 4x400 with a time of 3:25.46 and punch their tickets to the final stage of their high school track seasons.
Hillsdale, Hillsdale Academy track teams head to MITCA Team State Finals; Schedule
HILLSDALE COUNTY — It is officially MITCA week. The MITCA final power rankings filled in the final spots for the team state finals meets being held this weekend. Traditionally, MITCA team state championships are held the week before the MHSAA state finals. MITCA's team state championships were designed by MITCA in an effort to crown a true team state champion in each division.
Ottawa Hills, Lake advance to D-III district finals
DEFIANCE — Ottawa Hills is one win away from a third consecutive district championship following an 8-1 victory over Archbold. Standing in the way is Lake, which outlasted Otsego 10-6 in the late game of the Division III districts, setting the stage for Saturday’s noon showdown with a regional berth on the line. “We got clutch hits, we scored in five of the six innings, and we got pretty good pitching,” summed up Ottawa Hills head coach Chris Hardman, who led the Green Bears to the state semifinals a year ago and now has his squad at 18-9 this season against a very challenging schedule. Deadlocked at 1-1, Ottawa Hills pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third and pulled away with one in the fourth and two in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Divisions II softball: Maumee and Bryan to meet in regional semifinal
Some familiar teams are looking to make their way through regional softball action this week. In Division II, Maumee (20-8, 10-4 Northern Buckeye Conference) returns to the regionals after reaching the D-II regional finals a year ago when the Panthers lost 10-5 to eventual state champion Tallmadge. The Panthers will face Northwest Ohio Athletic League champion Bryan (19-5, 7-0), which is making its third straight trip to the D-II regionals under fifth-year coach Samantha Molina, a 2014 Maumee grad and former Panthers player. That game is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shelby High School. The regional final against either Lexington or Akron Springfield is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.
Morenci's Kay Johnson earns 1,000th victory
MORENCI — Hall of Fame coach Kay Johnson added another milestone to her remarkable career Monday when her Morenci softball team beat East Jackson 8-5 for coaching victory No. 1,000. “It’s just another number,” Johnson said. “It’s pretty nice that I was able to make it. It makes me think about all the players who have contributed to those wins.” ...

Voigt, Thiel at the forefront of historic success for Bryan athletics
BRYAN — Bryan High School has enjoyed a historic amount of success the past four years in softball, girls basketball, and girls soccer. For all of the conference, district, and regional trophies the Golden Bears have brought back to the northwest corner of Ohio, Ella Voigt and Kailee Thiel have been right there for every moment. The senior three-sport standouts have had a historic high school career at Bryan that includes 10 Northwest Ohio Athletic League championships, five OHSAA district titles, and several of the best tournament runs in school history. The duo’s skillset, dedication, and leadership have stood out in setting a sky-high standard for the Golden Bears. “I think it’s huge because if you look at it, it’s not just one or two seasons that they’ve had success with. You’re talking three, four years with that to where they have raised the bar with Bryan athletics,” Bryan athletic director Nathan Keel said. “They’re the first people in the weight room, they’re the last ones to leave. They’re in there in the morning, they’re in there in the evening, in the summer.
