Floyd County Set To Enact COAM Rules Tuesday
The Floyd County Commission is expected to finalize the adoption of its ordinance regulating gaming machines Tuesday. A public hearing is scheduled before the vote on COAMs — the coin operated gaming machines called “ding dings” by many players. The board also is expected to adopt a resolution amending the moratorium it imposed on new machines and vape shops this spring. County commissioners plan to start their meeting at 6...
Rome Remembers The Fallen On Memorial Day
“Memorial Day is to honor those who never made it out of their uniforms,” the mother who lost her son in the Iraq war told the crowd. Jan Johnson knows about loss. Her son Justin Johnson was 22 when he was killed in Iraq in 2004. But she told those in attendance during the Rome Exchange Club’s Memorial Day service Monday that it illustrates why it is important to remember our veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. ...

Callier Springs Rezoning Heads to Rome City Commission Along With COAM Ordinance
The Rome City Commission is scheduled to rule Tuesday on a rezoning that clears the way for single-family homes instead of townhouses on a 309-acre tract off Callier Springs Road. The property behind the East Rome Walmart was rezoned for multifamily use in 2022, for a project called Avalon at Rome with townhomes and apartments. New developers want to convert that to Brook Ridge at Etowah, featuring 465 single family houses. ...
Floyd Property Taxes Are Up Again But There May Be Relief Ahead
Most Floyd County taxpayers have received their property tax assessment and, unless tax rates are reduced locally, they can expect to pay more in taxes. Despite higher assessments, there’s still a chance to reduce the amount paid in taxes. That chance lies in tax rates — officially known as millage rates — which are set by local governments. The process ...
From Mugshots to Milestones: Floyd Drug Court Graduates Succeed
As Jake Bishop spoke, a photo collage showed behind him which contained the mugshot taken at the jail before his entry into the drug court program. But that image, one from the lowest points in his life, was overshadowed by images of the life that has since followed. Those contained smiles, family, hugs and a fish caught on a summer day. When he spoke, he spoke of an overwhelming gratitude...
Around Town: Wellstar's Foray Into Floyd and Old Glory On Riverside
Is a newly erected Wellstar sign a shot across the bow just after the dust of multiple healthcare mergers has begun settling in Floyd County? Not likely. The branding looks to be more of the same doc-in-the-box McDonaldization of medical care. We saw the Piedmont branding of what were the two Redmond urgent care locations in Rome after AdventHealth took over, and the signage along Turner McCall appears to be more of the same — at least for now. ...
160th Anniversary of Pickett's Mill: Civil War Reenactment This Weekend!
The reenactment will begin at 10 am. on Saturday, May 25th and will end at 3pm later that day. The event will occur at the Pickett's Mill Battlefield Historic Site located in Dallas, Georgia just a few miles from Acworth, Georgia.
Rome Faces Higher Costs for Inmate Housing
It seems the price of everything is going up, and that includes the cost of housing inmates at the Floyd County Jail. Rome contracts with the jail to house inmates who are arrested on municipal charges and the current agreement has expired. Under the old agreement, the booking fee was $15 and there was a minimum $40 per day inmate fee. Under the new agreement, those rates go up to $25 and $65, respectively. ...
Results Decisive In Floyd County GOP Primary Races
The two races that were effectively decided in the Floyd County GOP primary were decisive. Because there are no Democrats running for Floyd County sheriff or clerk of court, the winners of the Republican primary will appear alone on the general election ballot this fall. Floyd County Sheriff Dave Roberson swept his competitor Robbie Whitfield, 5,256 votes to 1,354, winning all 19 precincts to gain a second term in office. ...
