A Local's Guide to Sturgeon Fishing on the Rainy River
Lake sturgeon fishing is becoming more popular, especially in the Rainy River, due to the large number of fish. Beginners may find it helpful to hire a guide from a local resort. They can provide suitable sturgeon gear, show the correct setups with sturgeon rigs, and direct to the best fishing spots on the river. If you want to use your own boat and tackle, strong rods, reels, and line are recommended. Sturgeons are strong, so heavier gear can shorten the fight time, reducing stress on the fish and aiding in its release.

Local Anglers Gear Up for 27th Annual Ice Out Northern Pike Tournament at Zippel Bay
The 27th Annual Ice Out Northern Pike Tournament is scheduled for April 27-28, 2024, at Zippel Bay. Anglers are eagerly preparing for the event, which takes place during the pike season on Lake of the Woods, a border water with Canada. This season offers a chance to catch large pike during their spawning period in April and early May. Zippel Bay, separate from the main lake, is a favored location for catching big pike.
Local Ice Fishing Update: Successful Catches and Improved Conditions on South End
Ice fishing is currently active on the south end, with many anglers reporting a successful catch. The catch includes walleyes, saugers, perch, eelpout, and occasional pike. The cold weather has improved ice conditions, allowing for higher weight limits on ice roads. Resort and sleeper fish houses are available, and some ice roads are allowing pickup trucks with wheelhouses. For safety, it's important to stick to the resort ice roads.
