Regarding your editorial, “Syracuse board sends wrong message on affordable housing” (May 19, 2024):. Projects like the proposed Helio building on Cortland Avenue make poverty worse. They are financially viable for the developers, but they are not economically viable for the community in the neighborhood. Systemically grouping and isolating the poor among the poor makes poverty harder to escape; it limits people’s access to opportunity and constrains the vision of the community.

Look what the clients of Helio and other agencies did at the Skyline Apartments: rampant crime, open drug use, multiple police and ambulance calls daily, needles and human waste in hallways, and murder. Does anyone remember that poor woman and what an ugly death she suffered?
