'We were expendable': Downwinders from world's 1st atomic test are on a mission to tell their story
Not many people know the world's first detonation of an atomic bomb was on U.S. soil. It would be weeks later that humanity would witness the power of atomic weapons when bombs were dropped on Japan during World War II. While the damage in Japan has been well documented, the story of New Mexico downwinders and the health effects that resulted from Trinity Test fallout is relatively unknown. The documentary “First We Bombed New Mexico” is now screening in Los Alamos, the birthplace of the atomic bomb, as part of the Oppenheimer Film Festival. Director Lois Lipman hopes the film resonates with Congress and other elected leaders as advocates push for compensation for survivors of the first atomic blast.
