Local Neosho County Commissioner Steps In to Aid Galesburg Volunteer Fire Department Funding
ERIE — Neosho County Commissioner Nicholas Galemore offered to assist Galesburg Fire Chief John Lilburn in finding a funding source for the volunteer fire department. USD 413 Board Approves Donation of Two Local Properties to Main Street Chanute
The USD 413 Board of Education Wednesday gave its approval for Superintendent Matt Koester to work with the board attorney to draft an agreement for the donation of two district-owned properties, 313 and 315 East Main, to Main Street Chanute. Governor Kelly Announces Drought Watch for Neosho County: Urges Water Conservation
TOPEKA — Governor Laura Kelly has approved updated drought declarations for Kansas counties with Executive Order #24-01. Specifically, Neosho County is under a Drought Watch, as of Wednesday, March 6. “While drought conditions have improved greatly in recent months, many counties continue to be negatively impacted by the decline in water supply or strains on water resources,” Kelly said. “I strongly encourage all Kansans to continue to conserve water as we head into the summer months.”Visit here for more details.
Local Chanute Airport Secures $180K for Wildlife Barrier Fence Project
The Chanute Martin Johnson Airport will receive $180,000 from the Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP), the governor announced earlier this week. Specifically, the funding obtained will be used for phase 2 of a fence project. Main Street Chanute Annual Meeting Highlights Community Achievements and Revitalization Efforts
Main Street Chanute, a local organization in Chanute, Kansas, conducted its yearly meeting on February 27, 2024, at Colborn’s Kitchen in Stone Creek Golf Course. The event started with a social hour and auctions, followed by a dinner. The 2024 Board of Directors executive committee was introduced by President Cherryl Olson, and an election for the board was held. Debbie Deere, Assistant Director of Kansas Main Street, spoke about the organization's impact on Kansas communities.
Exciting March 2024 Youth Events at Our Local Iola Library
The Iola Library has scheduled youth events for March 2024. Storytimes will start on March 13th and 20th at 10:30 am, including a Kids Yoga Storytime. The library also has Spring Break events, all free but some need sign-ups by March 8th.
Chanute Local Rick Macias Honored with 2023 Marty Wooten Advocacy Award by SKIL
The Southeast Kansas Independent Living Resource Center (SKIL) has announced Chanute resident Rick Macias as the 2023 Marty Wooten Advocacy award recipient. “It makes me feel good. It makes me feel recognized that I am doing a good job with everything …,” Macias said. “And it does feel good to be appreciated and recognized for everything. Local Update: KDOT to Install New Light Towers at U.S. 169/54 Interchange in Iola
IOLA — Starting the week of March 4, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will install new light towers on the U.S. 169 and U.S. 54 interchange at Iola. The highway shoulders will be closed at the work zone with minimal effects to traffic.KDOT awarded the construction contract of $325,376 to Cooper Construction LLC, Emporia. Galesburg Volunteer Fire Department Secures KSFRSG Grant for New Gear and Washer
GALESBURG — The Galesburg Volunteer Fire Department was one of 78 departments in Kansas that was awarded funding through the Kansas Firefighter Recruitment and Safety Grant (KSFRSG) program, which is administered by the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Chanute City Commission Approves Midwest Engineering Group for Local Wastewater Treatment Plant Project
The Chanute City Commission gave approval of professional services with Midwest Engineering Group, LLC for a wastewater treatment plant. At last week’s city commission meeting, the commission heard from Daniel Coltrane of Midwest Engineering Group, LLC, who presented preliminary plans for the project. The engineering costs will be covered by the I&I Fund. In addition, city staff will look for project funding toward the end of 2025, according to officials. The total cost is set at $25,085,000, according to the plan by Midwest Engineering Group, LLC.Visit here for more details.
Local Alert: Boil Water Advisory in Effect for Residents South of 47 Highway and West of Lyons Road
A Boil Water Advisory (BWA) is in effect for parts of Neosho County Rural Water District No. 4. The affected area is south of 47 Highway and west of Lyons Road. The advisory began on February 26, 2024, due to line maintenance causing low pressure in the water system. This low pressure may lead to bacterial contamination.
