Pervasive PFAS Threat: Urgent Need for Safe Drinking Water
The Higgins family of Fairfield, Maine, had their lives drastically altered when the state's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) advised them against consuming water from their well due to dangerous levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Numerous wells across the state have been found to be contaminated, leading the DEP to install filtration systems to address the issue. PFAS, commonly found in everyday items, are known for their persistence and potential harm in high concentrations. In Maine, PFAS contamination is traced back to fertilizer sludge spread on farm fields. This revelation has spurred a broader recognition of the PFAS issue nationwide, with municipalities exploring solutions such as nanofiltration systems.
