Round 4 softball roundup: Down to final strike, No. 5 Sanger rallies past No. 6 Dumas
No. 5-ranked Sanger faced plenty of challenges throughout Saturday's softball playoff doubleheader against No. 6 Dumas, but found a way to win Game 3 of the series and advance to its first regional final since 2001.
Key role: Dumas, Pampa softball use experience of 4-4A play for extended playoff runs
There was rarely an easy game for softball teams in District 4-4A this season, and the district’s depth has shown in the playoffs. Every playoff qualifier, Dumas, West Plains, Pampa and Randall, reached the Region I quarterfinals to face each other. Dumas and Pampa are the two left standing in the Region I semifinals as the Demonettes defeated Randall and the Harvesters topped West Plains. Dumas faces Sanger this week, and Pampa takes on Burkburnett this weekend.
Local Spotlight: Quarter Horse Stars to Shine at SunRay Park This Saturday
The New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG3) will be held this Saturday at SunRay Park. The event features state-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses racing over 350 yards. One of the notable entries is JLB Eye The Tiger, trained by James J. Gonzales III and ridden by Christian Cardenas. This gelding, bought for $7,500 as a yearling, won his trial race earlier this month by half a length.

Demonettes sweep Seminole, claim bi-district crown
The Dumas Demonette varsity softball team defeated the Seminole Maidens 2-0 (in a best-of-three series) in the opening round of post-season play to be crowned bi-district champion this past weekend. Dumas outscored the Maidens 37-10 in the series with a total of eight home runs hit. Game One.
Dumas' Fierro, Gruver's Cowan voted Happy State Bank High School Athletes of the Week
Dumas softball player Vida Fierro and Gruver baseball player Stephen Cowan have been voted as the Happy State Bank Athletes of the week for last week. Fierro, won the female athlete of the week honor with 8,430 votes of the 16,515 votes cast or 51.04%. Fierro helped the Demonettes sweep Seminole in a bi-district softball playoff series going 6 for 7 with two home runs and six RBIs in two wins. ...
