One year Later, my how things have changed for Carroll County Softball. CCHS falls 6-3 but the future is shuck full of potential. Last year, shortly after the final out was recorded in a heart breaking 1-0 home loss to eventual state champion Northside, Carroll County head coach Rick Nester and I spent some time discussing the season that just ended as well as the season on the horizon. Carroll's season ends in region quarters
Nolan Medley struck out nine and allowed just two hits and one run over six innings Friday as Lord Botetourt ended Carroll County’s baseball season 7-1 in a Region 3D Quarterfinal in Hillsville. Medley kept the home-standing Cavaliers off balance most of the night with a mix of a heater in the mid-80s and a couple of effective offspeed pitches. The Lord Botetourt senior retired the first 14 batters he faced before giving up an infield single to Cody Reece with two outs in the...

Leath shuts down Radford in Carroll win
The script for Emma Leath to exit Cavalier Park could not have played out any better if Aaron Sorkin penned it himself. Leath recorded 11 strikeouts, pushing her career total up to 713 while scattering seven hits as she finished the game for the 20th straight time for the Cavaliers. ...
Lady Cavs push top-seeded Warriors to brink
One night after playing Bassett in Hillsville in the #8–#9 game, Carroll County traveled across Lovers Leap to play #1 seed Magna Vista on Thursday. Add in that the Lady Cavaliers were playing back-to-back matches and doing so minus three starters versus the best team in our region, properly setting the stage. CCHS was down to their final seconds when Magna Vista was called for a Red Card inside the...

Carroll captures district softball title
Freshman Laynie-Jo Leonard raced home from third base with the game-winning run in Carroll County’s 3-2 victory over James River on Thursday night in Hillsville. The thrilling Three Rivers District victory gave the regular season title to the Lady Cavaliers in what many expected to be a rebuilding season for head coach Rick Nester. “I am so very proud of the amount of fight this group has, especially when you consider just how young we are.” said Nester. “We were able to bounce back after...

Burcham hired as Carroll's next baseball coach
For the better part of two decades, Casey Burcham has given his all to Carroll County athletics — coaching football, basketball and baseball at the high school, including 11 seasons in which he coached all three in the same year. Having patiently waited for 18 years, Burcham finally got the call May 14 he’s been waiting for all his career — the one informing him he’s been named the new varsity head baseball coach at Carroll County High School. “I kind of got emotional about...
Humility, hope for the future modeled by this year's Golden Cavs
This year’s Carroll County High School top ten, the “Golden Cavaliers Celebration,” was marked by a collective humility among the chosen seniors, who almost all noted little things from their honorees had the most impact. Principal ChuckThompson said he knew the honorees would treasure the honor “because it comes from the people we are here for.” Superintendent Dr. Mark Burnette opened the May 9 event in the CCHS Cafeteria by saying many seniors this year are leaning a bit to one side, with the weight...
