Washington Local Schools welcomes its 1st Boys & Girls Club
When Jim Ravas became president and chief executive officer for Boys & Girls Club of Toledo in 2020, one of the first things he knew he had to do was expand the nonprofit to Washington Local Schools, he said. âIt was a priority because this is the second-largest school district in Lucas County,â he said. âTo me, it intuitively made sense to say we have to be here.â He reached out to former Washington Local Schools Superintendent Kadee Anstadt, who had wanted a Boys & Girls Club location within the school system for years but never knew how it would be possible. âItâs not an easy thing,â Ms. Anstadt said. âThereâs just a lot of moving parts to getting funding for a club. The thing that I, that none of us, put together is just how expensive it is to put together a club. There are wages to be paid, thereâs space that has to be available, and we donât have a lot of space here at Washington Local. ⊠You have to [meet] need qualifications from a national standpoint.â
Week 5 scouting report: Toledo football vs. Miami
Entering the season, Toledo-Miami was the game of the year in the Mid-American Conference. Itâs still an outstanding matchup, but it lost some luster with Toledoâs loss at Western Kentucky and Miamiâs 1-3 record. Still, when the MAC championship game kicks off in December, chances are this October meeting in the Glass Bowl will have made an impact. In the past, this game didnât have nearly as much value. However, with no divisions in the MAC, it takes on added significance. And for Toledo, thereâs another added element: revenge (and homecoming).
Lucas County Children Services is there to help, not 'take your kids,' agency officials say
Lucas County Children Services officials called on the community to be proactive by reaching out to them for help before problems develop to the point that foster placement of children is used as a last resort. âWe have learned that the best way to respond to child abuse and neglect is to prevent it before it occurs, as opposed to reacting to it after something bad has happened to a kid,â Randall Muth, the agencyâs executive director said. Mr. Muth spoke during a âcommunity conversationsâ meeting at the Frederick Douglass Community Association Center along Douglas Avenue in central Toledo. About 40 people attended the two-hour event, themed âSafe Children, Safe Families,â during which agency officials told about the services the agency provides and answered related questions. âI think there is a stigma in the African-American community that childrenâs services is interested in reacting, as opposed to helping the families,â Mr. Muth said. âWe want the Black community members to reach out to us to prevent [child] trauma, and to have faith and trust in the agency and [to know] that the last thing we want to do is remove your children.â
