Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan says deputies are investigating the death of a man in Rayburn Country. According to Duncan, the man’s body was in an advanced stage of decomposition when he was found by his son Monday morning outside in the yard of his house at 125 Bluebird Street in Audubon Hills.

A Jasper County man has died in an accidental electrocution yesterday. Jasper County Information Officer Karli Cherry said that some time before 5:00 Monday evening, a Jasper County man climbed under his house located on Farm-to-Market 1004 to make some type of a repair. At some point he touched an exposed wire and was electrocuted.

A broad trough of low pressure is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms from the southwestern Caribbean Sea into the southern Gulf of Mexico. Environmental conditions could support some gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form over the weekend as the broader disturbance moves fully into the Gulf of Mexico. Newton County Constable Howie Wonders has released important information regarding the homecoming parade route. The homecoming parade route will not be changing for many reasons, mainly due to safety concerns. In order to perform this parade in a safe manor Hwy 12 would need to be completely shut down during rush hour traffic for an hour or longer. This requires a permit from TXDoT 30 days in advance and may not even be approved by TXDoT. Shutting the hwy down without approval could (and most definitely would) result in the ISD being fined and possibly the county for my participation.If approved I'd have to have enough law enforcement personnel to shut down every road entering hwy 12 between the parade route and enough to block and reroute traffic at the hwy 12 and 87 intersection. Rerouting traffic would almost certainly cause large commercial vehicles to enter back county road which would cause damage to the roads and major traffic issues. I could go on and on but to put it simply, for the safety of the children as well as the audience that will be on the sidelines watching, we will have to stay with the route we've used in previous years. I will take full responsibility for this no one else is to blame. I would rather be safe and legal than be sorry. What we can and probably will do, is escort the floats etc. to school grounds afterward without shutting the highway down. Turnout was great for the Jasper Police Department Night Out Event that was held on Tuesday evening at the police station on South Main Street. In addition to hot dogs, popcorn, donuts and other treats, there were also displays and demonstrations from not only the police department but also, firemen, the Jasper County Emergency Corps and others. Also on hand was Jasper District Attorney Anne Pickle and her staff to answer questions and meet local residents.

The board of the Jasper Economic Development Corporation convened on Tuesday evening for a short meeting with no action items on the agenda. In his update on what is going on at JEDCO, Executive Director Eddie Hopkins said work was underway at the location of the former LP Plywood Mill on the east side of town. Hopkins said Gated Rentals, the Houston based company which plans to build small manufactured homes there was in the process of installing lighting as well as making major modifications and updates to the electrical facilities there as they prepare to begin operation. Hopkins praised the City of Jasper’s Electrical Superintendent Lee Wellman and his crew for their assistance at the facility, which he said included new electrical service to the site.

October 2, 2024 - The award-winning Texas Film Round-Up, a partnership between the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) and Texas Film Commission (TFC), travels to San Augustine October 4 - 5. TAMI will hold an event for Texans to drop-off their Texas-related films and videotapes for their free digitization program. Participants are encouraged to pre-register at TexasArchive.org/Round-Up. The two-day event is part of a special weekend event in San Augustine with the Texas Historical Commission and the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program. Films and video tape s can dropped off at the Augus Theatre (110 E Columbia Street, San Augustine, Texas), site of the MoMS traveling exhibition.
