Tour of Somerville: N.J.’s biggest bike race whips through soggy streets (PHOTOS)
Bicycle racers from across the world returned to Somerville for the borough’s 79th bicycle tour on Memorial Day, race organizers said. As the oldest continuing bicycle race in the country, the Somerset County annual holiday tradition saw hundreds of amateur and professional cyclists compete in this year’s Tour of Somerville in multiple races for varying age ranges and skill levels.
Baseball: Sayreville Wins First Round of Sectionals Over Hightstown, 4-3
SAYREVILLE, NJ - No. 8 seed Sayreville War Memorial baseball defeated No. 9 seed Hightstown 4-3 in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 Tournament on Thursday, May 23. The Bombers held a one-run lead for the first four innings before the Rams opened the top of the fifth with three runs. Sayreville responded with three runs themselves, and held that 4-3 lead for the remainder of the game.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE TAPINTO.NET NEWSLETTER Junior Thomas Schlaline started the game on the mound, earning four strikeouts and allowing one run through the first four innings. Senior Moe Hedderman would then come in relief of Schlaline, earning four strikeouts himself while allowing no runs through two innings pitched. Sayreville's offense saw four players earn hits on Thursday, led by senior Jake Romanello, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Other hits for Sayreville came from Chase Cannan, Thomas Schlaline, and Michael Robinson. Class of 2025 recruit Amaia Jackson was offered by Rutgers women’s basketball last week, the offer from the Scarlet Knights just one of several for the guard prospect. Jackson plays for Montverde Academy (Montverde, Florida), one of the top programs in the nation.
