Wexford-Missaukee ISD says Career Tech Center building tested high for PFAS
CADILLAC — The Wexford-Missaukee Intermediate School District is taking extra precautions after PFAS levels above the state standard were detected on their Career Tech Center campus. Wexford-Missaukee ISD superintendent David Cox said EGLE notified them that water samples taken from the Special Services and Heavy Equipment Technology and Agriscience buildings well exceeded the maximum contaminant level set by the state. The CTC dealt with high levels of PFAS in the past, but now says their general education building is testing at zero and most other buildings are below concerning levels. Still, they’re not taking any chances. “We don’t have to do anything. The health department said nothing was mandatory. It was not a requirement. It wasn’t a mandate. It was just as a heads up. and that was in the letter that we sent out. But out of abundance of caution, we provided bottled water and we filtered everything that was a source of consumption,” said Cox.
Cadillac family uses Spooky Sophie’s Halloween Bash to help others like them
CADILLAC — This Friday, the Cadillac community will honor the life a little girl taken from the world far too early. Sophia Hinkley fought a long battle against cancer before dying at 9 years old in September 2023. Her family said Halloween was always her favorite time of year, and that she never missed the chance to scare her friends and family. Last year, they honored Sophia with a community Halloween party. They want to make that celebration a tradition with Spooky Sophie’s Halloween Bash. Two haunted barns will be set up, along with a craft show, free costumes, food and tunes being spun by GT Vinyl. It’s a free event, but donations are appreciated and will go directly to the Helen Devos Children’s Hospital. “We’re hoping we can grow over time and make it bigger and better every year. But not only that, I’m hoping that we can turn it into something that will help people year round. We want to turn it into a nonprofit organization that can help families navigate these kind of troubled waters with insurance and all the gaps that need to be filled,” said Sophia’s dad, Jamie Hinkley.
Manton breaks ground on new public library building project
MANTON — Construction has started on the new Manton branch of the Wexford Public Library. Friends of the Manton Public Library began raising funds for the new building in 2019. On Tuesday, community members came together to celebrate the groundbreaking at the former VFW hall site. The new library will be nearly 3,000 square feet with a children’s area, computer lab, genealogy research and much more. “It’s a place for people to gather. It’s a place for people to learn. And, just get information. It’s not just about books. Obviously. They, are able to go there and find help from the librarians on just any number of things, teaching them how to apply online for jobs. The library is really the center of community support,” said Linda Kimbel, Friends president.
