Outdoors: Firsthand look at Lake Erie Walleye Trail event
HURON, Ohio — Wind and spray was whipping past my head as I hunkered back in the bean bag that boat captains provide for co-anglers to sit on during the Huron Pro-Am in the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament. Co-captain Rob Lester, of Chicago, had us on a quick pace to make our 2:45 p.m. tournament deadline in his 621 Ranger boat. The boat’s well was filled with five fish that would make up a nice bag to likely put us in contention with the leaders, but would it be enough to take first? “I like our chances,” said co-captain Joe Whitten of Curtice, Ohio. OHSAA girls Division I regional track and field recap
CLEVELAND, Ohio — All four OHSAA Division I track and field regionals wrapped up Friday to send 16 individuals to the state tournament in nine races and five field events. Athletes from cleveland.com’s seven-county coverage area in Northeast Ohio participated in both the Austintown and Port Clinton regional meets. More than 30 area athletes from both punched their tickets to Dayton.
Division II track and field: Oak Harbor boys win regional title
LEXINGTON, Ohio — Oak Harbor’s boys track and field team captured the team championship at the Division II regional meet at Lexington High School that concluded on Saturday. The top four finishers in each event qualified for next week’s state meet at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. In addition, the top two finishers outside of the top four statewide also will qualify. Oak Harbor totaled 58 points, edging out Huron and Ontario, which each had 56. The Rockets were led by Tyler Thompson’s win in the 200-meter dash (21.92) and third-place finish in the 100 (10.83).

Division III and IV softball: Oak Harbor to face former league foe in regional semifinal
Three Toledo-area high school softball teams will be chasing regionals in Division III and Division IV this week. In Division III, sixth-ranked NBC champion Oak Harbor (24-2, 11-1) looks to earn its second trip to the state final four in three years after reaching the D-II semifinals in 2022. The Rockets of second-year coach Cami Haas face former longtime Sandusky Bay Conference foe Margaretta (19-10) in Wednesday's 5 p.m. semifinal at Findlay High School. Two area teams have qualified for regionals in Division IV, with Buckeye Border Conference runner-up Montpelier (17-7, 7-1) facing Monroeville in the 5 p.m. semifinal at Rossford, and SBC River Division member Fremont St. Joseph (12-13) facing eighth-ranked Vienna Mathews in a 2 p.m. semifinal at Berea.
