The presidential election this year may well be determined in places like the neighborhood where I grew up in Croydon, Pennsylvania, an aging white working-class town in lower Bucks County, just north of Philadelphia.
Local first responders deploy to North Carolina to assist with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts
BALTIMORE, MD—Several local first responders have been deployed to North Carolina to help with recovery efforts following historic flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. The Associated Press reports that at least 121 deaths in six states have been attributed to the storm — a toll that climbed Monday as a clearer picture emerged of the devastation it inflicted on an area stretching from Florida’s Gulf Coast northward to the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia. The North Carolina county that includes Asheville reported at least 35 deaths, while dozens were also killed in Georgia and South Carolina.
Baltimore longshoremen sue owner and manager of ship that caused the Key Bridge collapse
BALTIMORE — A group of Baltimore longshoremen have sued the owner and manager of the ship that caused the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, arguing the companies should compensate them for wages lost while the port was closed in the aftermath of the deadly disaster. The class action lawsuit adds to a slew of other legal claims alleging the ship's Singapore-based owner and manager, Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and Synergy Marine Group, knowingly sent an unseaworthy ship into U.S. waters. ...
Environmental dept. surveying Orbitan Court in Parkville-Carney area
Baltimore County Councilman David Marks is alerting residents of Carney's Orbitan Court about survey work related to an assessment of the stream valley. The Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability is conducting an assessment of the stream valley behind the homes. Residents may see the design consultant (McCormick Taylor, Inc.) and their survey team (CV, Inc.) working in the vicinity of the stream.
